Sailor Nicholas A. Carr
You would be so proud of Nick, Mom! He graduated last Friday at the top of his class (one guy beat him academically by 1 point and physically by 4 pushups). He's lost more weight and has toned up nicely.
We got to watch his graduation on the internet (couldn't spot him, of course, oh well).
Then we got a call Saturday that he was flying to his schooling in Pensacola and he was coming through Atlanta with an hour delay between flights. "What time?" asks I. "9:45 tonight," says he. "We'll be there."
Because he was traveling with a group they got held up and we only got 5 minutes with him before he and a friend had to rush back to go and get to the next gate. It was so great to see him!
We got a call Sunday, a face-time call - like Dick Tracy - we could see him and he could see us - yay! He's so excited about his class and job. He can't tell us what part of the base he's on except that the rooms are really nice (a/c, fridge, closets, nice bathroom) and he'll be there for over a year.
When he got here he weighed 270 lbs and now probably 185-190 lbs in one year. He was dedicated. He's set up a savings plan, his wi-fi/phone and secured credit card to start rebuilding his credit - all on the first day at base. This is the kid that hadn't a clue about balancing a checking account or really how to handle money and be conscious of where money is going. It was enlightening for him beyond words to be here, Mom. "Hey, can we get this?" - "Not this time, we don't have the money and your paycheck isn't in yet." - "Oh, okay."
We are so proud to have given him space to mature rapidly and guide him on learning some of that stuff. He was an excellent employee and learned some lessons about friends and the varying levels of friendship (and how one friend can start to pull you down to their level of....slacker existence - he nipped that in the bud on his own!)
He knows this is a permanent home and the room back there is his first, guest room second (not that we have any guests)
His enlistment is for 6 years because his level of schooling is longer than what Chris did. It'll be very interesting to see what develops - hopefully he'll keep up the physical stuff to go along with the schooling and not become too seditary.
You would be beaming, Mom.
This was a 1 1/2 months after he got here (already his clothes no longer fit)
This was about 3 months ago
06/26/2017 - Major difference!
August 25, 2017 - Big difference! I love the smirk - that is so Nick!
08/26/2017 - A quick hug and handoff of his phone and tennis shoes. We didn't mind the drive or the waiting one bit!
We feel more like aunts than cousins at this point!
